The Dichotomy of Work in Agriculture
Over the years, agriculture has seen a significant shift in its practices and principles. Traditionally, it was the hard, physical labor in the fields that was highly valued. But as we delve into a new age of farming, there’s a growing appreciation for balancing this physical work with mental and emotional labor. Jared Sorensen, our guest on this episode of “Secrets of the Soil,” offers profound insights into this evolution. Sorensen, who hails from a lineage of ranchers, speaks to the need for understanding the deeper motivations behind farming and ranching—a conversation that was once dominated by tillage and herds has now grown to include the heart and mind of the agriculturalist.
Understanding the 'Why' in Farming
Host ‘Regen Ray’ Milidoni furthers this conversation by emphasizing the importance of exploring the soul of farming. The emotional aspect of why farmers do what they do can often be compared to therapy—it’s about digging deep to find that driving force, which in turn reflects in the care of the soil. This emotional connectivity highlights the significance of passion and not just profit in the agricultural life.
The Farmer’s Multifaceted Role
Agriculture is no longer just about cultivating crops or raising livestock; it’s also about being a savvy businessman. Farmers are required to wear multiple hats—marketer, strategist, and innovator—while making decisions that have a lasting impact on the land. Sorensen and Milidoni touch upon the necessity for farmers to be cognizant of the business aspect of farming and the challenges therein.
The Digital Revolution in Agriculture
An intriguing pivot point in agriculture has been the transition of live events to virtual summits, magnifying the footprint of knowledge sharing and learning. Sorensen is particularly surprised and enthusiastic about the international reach these virtual platforms allow. He strongly believes in the value of technology for connection, learning, and even stewardship.
Stewardship and Impact of Individual Decisions
Milidoni and Sorensen together underscore the essence of stewardship in agriculture, which sustains irrespective of whether one owns the land or not. Individual decisions made today echo into the future, affecting soil health and ecosystem vitality. They invite the audience to view themselves as custodians of the land, regardless of their living situation.
Reconnecting and Giving Back to Nature
Amid discussions about technology and business acumen, the conversation reels back to the core—nature. Sorensen shares an endearing anecdote about his son and earthworms, accentuating that reconnecting with the earth isn’t a mere philosophical notion but a genuine, tangible experience. He advocates for profitable and sustainable practices that not only preserve but regenerate the land for future generations.
Fostering Human and Soil Regeneration
As Sorensen and Milidoni conclude their talk, they delve into the undeniable link between personal growth and successful stewardship. Becoming a “regenerative human” paves the way to cultivating regenerative farms. Changing one’s lens and mindset toward stewardship—not just of the land, but of one’s thoughts and emotions—is paramount.
Be an Advocate for Soil Stewardship
The episode wraps up with a potent call to action for listeners to become advocates for soil stewardship. Sorensen’s approach involves not only advocating regenerative practices but living them out in one’s day-to-day life. He invites listeners to connect with his education program, Ag Steward, and engage with the plethora of resources available, signifying a community’s shared passion for the well-being of our soil.
